Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote for Mac

Historically we have released a new version of Office for Mac approximately six to eight months after Office for Windows. However, following the release of Office 365 we made the conscious decision to prioritize mobile first and cloud first scenarios for an increasing number of people who are getting things done on-the-go more frequently. This meant delivering and continuing to improve Office on a variety phones (iPhone, Windows Phone, and Android) and tablets (iPad and Windows)—brought together by the cloud (OneDrive) to help people stay better organized and get things done with greater efficiency at work, school, home and everywhere between.

Continuing our commitment to our valued Mac customers, we are pleased to disclose the roadmap for the next version of Office for Mac—including Word for Mac, Excel for Mac, PowerPoint for Mac and OneNote for Mac.

In the first half of 2015 we will release a public beta for the next version of Office for Mac, and in the second half of 2015 we will make the final release available. Office 365 commercial and consumer subscribers will get the next version at no additional cost, and we will release a perpetual license of Office for Mac in the same timeframe.

De-clutter your inbox in Office 365

The Clutter experience

Take a look at this video to learn how Clutter helps you keep focused on the most important items in your inbox.

How Clutter works

Clutter learns from your actions to determine the messages you are likely to ignore. As less important messages arrive, they are automatically moved to the Clutter folder. Clutter does this by leveraging Office Graph’s sophisticated machine learning techniques to determine which messages are Clutter. It gets smarter over time, learning from your prior actions with similar messages, and assessing things like the type of content and even how you are addressed in the message. The Clutter experience is personalized to each individual and reflects an email experience that adapts to your actions and preferences without you having to do anything. The information Clutter learns from each user’s actions are only applied to that user’s experience and are not shared with anyone else.

Getting started with Clutter

By default, Clutter is disabled for your inbox. Each person controls whether to turn Clutter on or off. You control Clutter from the Outlook Web App (OWA) options menu. You can turn it on as soon as Clutter is available for your Office 365 tenant. Clutter begins taking actions once it has sufficiently learned your work style and can confidently begin working for you. If you later find Clutter isn’t for you, it can be turned off any time.
Clutter is best suited and most effective for those of us who tend to pile up messages in our inboxes. Clutter respects your existing email rules, so if you have created rules to organize your email those rules continue to be applied and Clutter won’t act on those messages.

Working with Clutter

The less important messages are simply moved to the Clutter folder. They remain out of your way until you have time to review the items—if you choose to. You can proactively train Clutter by marking items as Clutter or simply move the items to the Clutter folder. If you find items in your Clutter folder that shouldn’t be there, train Clutter by moving the message back to your inbox. Clutter continuously learns and will adapt to your new patterns within days when you begin working on new projects or a new role. As you work with Clutter it will notify you of its activity in your inbox, this is Clutter helping you keep in control of your messages

The Clutter folder allows you to take advantage of the feature across many email clients including Outlook, OWA, OWA for devices, or EAS connected devices. Clutter continuously learns from your actions across these clients. Regardless of the client, the messages moved to the Clutter folder are out of your inbox view—yet readily accessible.

Microsoft Teams rolls out to Office 365 customers worldwide

Today, during a global webcast from Microsoft headquarters, we announced that Microsoft Teams—the chat-based workspace in Office 365—is now generally available in 181 markets and in 19 languages. Since announcing the preview in November, more than 50,000 organizations have started using Microsoft Teams, including Accenture, Alaska Airlines, Cerner Corporation, ConocoPhillips, Deloitte, Expedia, J.B. Hunt, J. Walter Thompson, Hendrick Motorsports, Sage, Trek Bicycle and Three UK. We’ve also introduced more than 100 new features to deliver ongoing innovation and address top customer requests.
With more than 85 million active users, Office 365 empowers individuals, teams and entire organizations with the broadest and deepest toolkit for collaboration. Office 365 is designed to meet the unique workstyle of every group with purpose-built, integrated applications: Outlook for enterprise-grade email; SharePoint for intelligent content management; Yammer for networking across the organization; Skype for Business as the backbone for enterprise voice and video; and now, Microsoft Teams, the new chat-based workspace in Office 365.

Microsoft Teams—the chat-based workspace in Office 365

Microsoft Teams is a digital workspace built on four core promises: chat for today’s teams, a hub for teamwork, customization options and security teams trust.

Chat for today’s teams

Microsoft Teams provides a modern conversations experience, with threaded, persistent chat to keep everyone engaged. We’ve rolled out many new communication features since preview, including audio calling from mobile devices, plus video on Android, which is coming soon to iOS and Windows Phone. And we’ve addressed numerous customer requests, adding the ability to email a channel, including attachments, send messages with markdown-based formatting, and receive notifications about all posts in a channel.
Move a conversation from email into Microsoft Teams with rich formatting, including attachments.

Hub for teamwork

The Office 365 applications and services that people use every day—including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, SharePoint and Power BI*—are built into Microsoft Teams, giving people the information and tools they need. We’ve recently added support for open, public teams within an organization. We’ve also enhanced the meeting experienceby adding scheduling capabilities, integrating free/busy calendar availability for team members, adding recurrence, and making it easier to transition from chat to high-quality voice and video.
Ad hoc and scheduled voice and video meetings right from within Microsoft Teams.

Customizable for every team

Every team is unique, so we’ve made it easy for teams to customize their workspace with Tabs, Connectors and Bots. More than 150 integrations are available or coming soon, including Bots from hipmunk, Growbot and ModuleQ. We’re also partnering with SAP and Trello to build new integrations. SAP SuccessFactors will help employees and managers track goals and performance as part of the way they work in Microsoft Teams every day. Trello will empower teams to easily get projects done with boards, lists and cards right within Microsoft Teams. These partnerships let users bring important apps and services into Microsoft Teams, truly making it their own hub for teamwork.
New Bots help you to complete tasks within your conversations.

Security teams trust

Finally, Microsoft Teams is built on the Office 365 hyper-scale, enterprise-grade cloud, delivering the advanced security and compliance capabilities our customers expect. Microsoft Teams supports global standards, including SOC 1, SOC 2, EU Model Clauses, ISO27001 and HIPAA. We also added support for audit log searcheDiscovery and legal hold* for channels, chats and files as well as mobile application management with Microsoft Intune.* And starting today, Microsoft Teams is automatically provisioned within Office 365.
These security and compliance capabilities are critical for enterprise customers, but our responsibility at Microsoft goes beyond this. Our mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. With that in mind, we’re working to ensure every team member can participate, with new accessibility features, including support for screen readers, high contrast and keyboard-only navigation. This will enable Microsoft Teams to be more inclusive and tap into the collective brainpower and potential of every person.

Customers achieve more with Microsoft Teams

We’re thrilled by the enthusiasm of customers like Trek Bicycle, who’ve built Microsoft Teams into the way they work every day.
“Across Trek’s global teams, the integrated collection of Office 365 applications serves up a common toolset to collaboratively drive the business forward. We see Microsoft Teams as the project hub of Office 365 where everybody knows where to find the latest documents, notes and tasks, all in-line with team conversations for complete context. Teams is quickly becoming a key part of Trek’s get-things-done-fast culture.”
—Laurie Koch, vice president of Global Customer Service at Trek Bicycle

Complete Info on how Microsoft plans to upgrade Office 365

office.com setup Six week before, Microsoft officially declared that from that time onwards its Windows 10 would be refreshed two times in a year –in the month of March and September for making its updates, launches schedules more obvious and reasonable to the enterprises.

However an unnoticed but a real fact is that almost a similar scheme was also announced by the company based in Redmond, Washington for corporate subscribers to Office.com/setup 365. The scheme signifies that the application suite called Office 365 ProPlus made available to customers at $20 per head per month Enterprise E3 and at $35 per head per month Enterprise E5 would also be upgraded twice in a year same as Windows 10.
Microsoft summarized the method which it will use for delivering and supporting ProPlus from September. In this article, we will bring some most important questions along with their answers that we had extracted from this description of Microsoft, in front of you.
  1. What will be the new schedules for updates of Office?
Same as Windows 10, twice in a year, say- in the month of March and September.
Since the launch of Office 2016, Microsoft has turned the updates to be launch twice in a year from the previously three times schedule.
  1. Why a word “feedback” has been said by the Microsoft?
It is used by the Microsoft to justify the change it had made, as it usually does. Microsoft’s marketing executive Ron Markezich posted in a blog that “the company has been asked to simplify the process of updates as well as to improve the synchronization between Windows and Office by the users.”
  1. Really, that’s all it took or money played a role?
Microsoft is focused on promoting its one year ago introduced subscription program “Secure Productive Enterprise,” which is a more secure, trusted and productive method that combines the best of Enterprise Mobility + Security(a combination of user management tools and devices, along with enhanced security options), Windows 10 Enterprise and Office 365. Similar to other subscriptions program, SPE is also available in two types; E3 and E5. Out of the two, E5 is more costly as it is available with additional features such as enterprise calling, security and others.
Ron Markezich, the Microsoft’s marketing executive said “the change, that SPE had bundled both Office 365 ProPlus and Windows 10, will make it easy for the customers to plan and manage updates for both Windows and Office using this ‘Secure Productive Enterprise’”.
Hence, Customers suggests the Microsoft that the Windows 10 and the Office 365
ProPlus release schedules have to be synchronized for raising the sale of SPE.
  1. What are the other changes made in addition to the schedule change?
The change has also been made in the support duration that is Microsoft has increased it up to 50%, extending it from 12 months per update to 18 months. Hence, according to Markerich, “IT professionals can update once or twice a year now”.
  1. Were Windows 10 and Office 365 not on the same tempo before and also didn’t come with 12 months of support per update?
The answer of both the questions is “Yes”. Based on Office 2016, both the Windows 10 and latest version of the Office 365 ProPlus were shifting towards the launch. Microsoft’s new schedule for releasing updates thrice a year and providing support for 12 months is available for both the sources but firstly for Windows and then for ProPlus. Even the names used for release tracks were similar before, for example it was “Branch” before switching to “Channels”.
  1. Something more?
“Yes”, the terminology Microsoft uses before has been changed.
Microsoft’s twice-in-a-year feature updates will refer to both “Pilot” as well as “Broad” by most of the people. Both of these are named as Semi-annual Channel and describe how Microsoft proposes them to be utilized in the enterprises.
This is the 3rd set of names hung on the faster release schedule by Microsoft after its first
and original label “Current Branch” and “Current Branch for Business” that was used for
Windows 10, and was ditched for the “Channel” terminology in 2016.
  1. When will be the first Office 365 ProPlus update release under the new schedule?
Microsoft said that the “Pilot” channel will be transported on 12th of September this year followed by the “Broad” channel which will be transported four month from then on 9th of January 2018.
The second releases of the two; a new “Pilot” and a new “Broad” will be available for the customers on March 13, 2018 and July 10, 2018 respectively.
The above information clarifies that the “Pilot” channel will be made available each March and September and the “Broad” will be each January and July.
  1. Can I or my firm skip a ProPlus features update?
The answer to this question is “Yes” but with the conditions that one has to hurry up to acquire the next supported version before completely leaving the first one.
It means the companies are provided a time of just two months to migrate from one version to another additionally skipping the version in between. For example: you have only two months for migrating from “Broad 1” to “Broad 3” skipping “Broad 2” in between.
Explanation: Suppose a company wants to employ the “Broad” Channel to be release in January 2018 but to skip the one to be release in July 2018. So, here the company will be getting only the two month time between January 8, 2019 and March 12, 2019 to utilize the next ProPlus.
  1. What will happen to the update (due in June according to the previous schedule of the Office 365 schedule) under the new schedule?
Microsoft stated in an extended support report that, “Office is still planning to release a new delayed channel and June 13, 2017 is the date set for its first release”.
Signifying that instead of the usual four months, there are only three months available for the current Office 365 subscribers to conduct “Pilots” and validate the applications with the June’s “First Release for Deferred Channel” release before validating with the final “Deferred Channel” release that will take place in September.

Get started on PowerShell for Office 365

Starting today, PowerShell for Office 365, a new website designed to help Office 365 IT administrators get started on Windows PowerShell for Office 365 is now live. Announced at Microsoft Ignite, this website is targeted at IT administrators with little to no experience with Windows PowerShell. The website is focused on simple scenarios that are focused entirely for Office 365 administration.

Learning PowerShell for Office 365 makes the job of IT admins easier and more efficient. For example, say your company goes through a large reorganization where departments change names and move to different management. If you are dealing with a few changes and a few people, the Office 365 Admin Center can quickly be used to make the changes. However, consider the task at hand if the changes involved hundreds or even a thousand users. While the Office 365 Admin Center is more than capable of making all the changes, the amount of work and the time it would take would be massive if the IT admin had to edit the users one–by-one.

With PowerShell the updates can be made in three steps. First, you export the list of users into a CSV (comma separate values) file. Second, you make the necessary edits in the CSV file. Third, you import the edited user list back into Office 365. With a few PowerShell scripts, you have just automated the process of updating the company directory to match your organization. And you saved yourself significant amounts of time.

PowerShell does not replace the Office 365 Admin Center. In fact, they are complementary tools and should both be used. The strength of PowerShell only really becomes apparent when you need to handle scenarios such as:

  • Adding or editing a large number of users.
  • Using multiple filters to sort through data.
  • Exporting data such as user lists and groups.
  • Configuring less commonly used settings.
The new PowerShell for Office 365 website is targeted to get you up to speed with PowerShell as soon as possible. The website is organized to provide you with the following right from the start including:

  • Consolidated guide to help you setup your machine to run PowerShell.
  • Simple and applicable common scenarios.
  • Sample scripts you can download, edit and then use right away.
  • Links to resources such as TechNet to get more details.
  • Connect with your peers and with us in the Office 365 Network.
By using the PowerShell for Office 365 website, you start the journey in learning a valuable tool for administering Office 365 to help you complete your tasks quicker and get more done. Get started on PowerShell for Office 365 today.

Automatically create process diagrams in Visio from Excel data

Diagrams don’t always start in Visio. They often begin as hand-drawn sketches or—in today’s data-driven age—in Excel. Using Data Visualizer, business analysts can represent process steps and associated metadata in a structured Excel table and quickly convert that information into a visualized Visio diagram. You can do this by either using a premade Excel template or an existing spreadsheet of your own design. The premade templates—there’s one for basic and one for cross-functional flowcharts—provide a sample mapping table to populate with diagram metadata. The table includes predefined columns for process step number, description, dependencies, owner, function, phase and more. You can also customize the table with your own columns to meet specific business requirements.

Once the table is populated, Visio’s wizard helps you complete the remaining steps to transform your Excel data into a Visio process diagram. If you customize the premade template or create one of your own, the wizard helps you map certain flowchart parts, like swim lanes and connectors. The resulting diagram is linked to the Excel table, so if the underlying process data is modified, the diagram updates accordingly. Likewise, shape modifications in Visio are preserved if the Excel data changes.

Additionally, analysts can save their Visio diagrams and the underlying Excel mapping table as a single package using the “Export as a Template Package” feature. These packages can be shared and reused by others, eliminating the need to recreate the same diagram from scratch while encouraging process consistency across the organization.

Announcing the public preview of the new office setup Network online community

As more organizations embrace the cloud and move to Office 365, we want to make the wealth of valuable information in the Office 365 Network available to anyone who is looking for it. Currently, the Office 365 Network is hosted as an authenticated Yammer network, which requires registration and sign-in to participate in the community, and makes discussion content searchable and discoverable only by users who are registered and signed in to the network. In an effort to make the community content accessible to anyone, the new Office 365 Network will be hosted on an unauthenticated platform, meaning community posts will appear in internet search results and visitors won’t have to sign in to view content in the network.

The Office 365 Network will continue to be a community for valuable insights and great conversations, including engagement from Office 365 product teams seeking input and feedback on products, knowledge sharing among community members and involvement from product experts, who help make the Office 365 Network the place to be for passionate technology pros to connect every day.

The new experience provides the ability for community members to:
  • Personalize your home page so it displays community discussions and other content related to topics you select.
  • Earn badges based on your activity in the community, which will be displayed on your profile page along with a summary of your activity—including latest posts, likes given and received, people you follow and community notifications.
  • Search community content to uncover discussions, ideas and other information from across the Office 365 Network.
  • View conversations as threaded conversations and hold private conversations with others using your community inbox.

Community members will no longer be able to create a group at will, but can request a new group in the Community Ideas Exchange.

We encourage current Office 365 Network members to start participating in the new Office 365 Network right away by visiting network.office.com. The current Office 365 Network will permanently redirect to the new community starting September 1, 2016.

Some technical communities will continue to be hosted on Yammer, as it provides a secure, authenticated environment for NDA discussions. This includes the Office 365 MVP Network, an invitation-only network for Office Server & Services MVPs and Microsoft product teams—and a new external group for Yammer Community Managers, which will also be invitation only. To view content and participate in these communities, participants need to be invited, and sign-in is required.

Try the OneDrive app for Windows 10 on your PC to access all your files

The new OneDrive sync client already comes pre-installed on Windows 10 PCs, allowing users to easily access their synced files through File Explorer. But this new app is a great touch-friendly complement to sync that lets you open, edit and share any of your personal or work files without having to sync them to your device.

Additional features previously only available in the browser experience are also available, such as restoring files from the Recycle Bin, easily dragging and dropping files to the app to upload them, quickly accessing recent documents─which will open directly in the Office applications on your computer─finding files shared with you by others and more.

This update delivers OneDrive experiences to even more devices, and we will bring other capabilities to this platform over time. As we announced last week, this app will also provide an easy and lightweight way to access your company’s SharePoint libraries, and we look forward to sharing additional details on what else we’re working on very soon.

How a government worker uses Office

Microsoft has years of experience working with governments at all levels around the globe. After weighing the options, government agencies including New York State, the Hamburg Port Authority, and the Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission have decided that Office 365 is the right solution for them. And so have many other government agencies. With Office 365, government workers use familiar tools to maximize their productivity, take collaboration to a new level, and better serve citizens.

With Google Apps, staying productive isn’t as easy. Users waste time searching for familiar Outlook features. Their ability to collaborate is compromised. And staying productive without internet access is difficult.

The infographic below shows what a day in the life of a government worker is like using Office 365 versus Google Apps. Check it out for yourself!

More than ever, people are reliant on their peers to help get things done

Around the world teamwork is on the rise. Research suggests employees now work on nearly double the number of teams than they did just five years ago. This means more than ever people are reliant on their peers to help get things done. But a “one size fits all” approach does not work when it comes to group collaboration—different tools appeal to different groups and address unique needs.

This is not your typical online event

Each 90-minute session starts with an online business roundtable discussing your biggest business challenges with a trained facilitator and then transitions into a live environment in the cloud. You will receive a link to connect your own device to a remote desktop loaded with our latest and greatest technology so you can experience first-hand how Microsoft tools can solve your biggest challenges.

During this interactive online session, you will explore:
  • How Microsoft Teams, the newest collaboration tool:
    • Keeps everyone engaged with threaded persistent chat.
    • Creates a hub for teamwork that works together with your other Office 365 apps.
    • Builds customized options for each team with channels, connectors, tabs and bots.
    • Adds your personality to your team with emojis, GIFs and stickers.
  • How to keep information secure while being productive—Make it easier to work securely and maintain compliance without inhibiting your workflow.
  • How to quickly visualize and analyze complex data—Zero in on the data and insights you need without having to involve a BI expert.
  • How to co-author and share content quickly—Access and edit documents even while others are editing and reviewing them all at the same time.
  • How to get immediate productivity gains—Most attendees leave with enough time-saving skills that time invested to attend a Customer Immersion Experience more than pays for itself in a few short days.

Updates for OneNote Class Notebook, Learning Tools and Office Lens—plus stickers!

The OneNote team continues to listen to teachers to learn about how we can help them be more productive with our software. Today, we are announcing a set of improvements across OneNote Class Notebook, Learning Tools and Office Lens. All these improvements have come directly from our regular discussions with teachers and include:
  • The availability of Class Notebook Tools on more platforms.
  • Updates for Learning Tools for OneNote—new languages and more.
  • The ability for teachers to give stickers to students in their Class Notebooks.
  • New embeddable content types from partners.
  • Updates for the OneNote Class Notebook and LMS.
  • The availability of Office Lens for iPad, including Learning Tools.

Class Notebook Tools—now available for OneNote Online and the Windows 10 app

We’re excited to announce that OneNote Class Notebook Tools are now available for OneNote Online and OneNote for Windows 10 to help teachers work even more efficiently across more platforms!

With the Class Notebook Tools for OneNote Online and OneNote for Windows 10, you can do the following:

Distribute a page or section to your students—Rather than sending students to the Content Library to copy a page for themselves, teachers can distribute a page to all students in a class with just two clicks.
Review student work sequentially—Just like in the Class Notebook add-in for OneNote 2013 or 2016, teachers are provided with a list of all the pages they’ve distributed and a quick way to sequentially review work (homework, assignments, quizzes, etc.). Simply click a student’s name to navigate to the page in the student’s notebook.

Updates for OneNote 3 and 4

OneNote Online is rolling out today to Office 365 Education customers, with the OneNote for Windows 10 update available in the coming days in the Windows Store, and you will be able to download the OneNote Windows 10 app and enable the feature through settings in the Options menu.

Learning Tools updates—new languages and more

We have been hard at work rolling out Learning Tools across new apps and platforms—including Word desktop, Word Online, OneNote Online and Office Lens for the iPhone. At the same time, we’ve been listening to teachers and students and making improvements to the original Learning Tools add-in for OneNote. Our international audiences expressed the desire to have Learning Tools in more languages, as well as the ability to use dictation in more languages, and are pleased to launch two improvements in this area:
  • The Learning Tools user interface is now localized in six new languages: Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese (Traditional).
  • Support for three new dictation languages: Russian, Portuguese (Brazil) and Chinese.
Updates for OneNote 5

Support for three new Dictation languages—Chinese, Portuguese and Russian.

We also heard the desire to have explicit punctuation when dictating. For example, saying “period” now translates to “.” and “question mark” translates to “?

In addition to these improvements, we made a few other enhancements:

  • Now, when IT admins deploy Learning Tools, the Update button is only displayed on client machines that have rights to install updates.
  • Implemented several bug fixes and performance improvements.

Fun with stickers

A top request by teachers was to add some “fun” when giving feedback to students in OneNote. Now teachers can give students stickers in OneNote—as well as easily add a personalized message to the sticker. In addition, we plan to release new stickers packs throughout 2017—so keep an eye out for more “fun” way to give students feedback.
Stickers are available today in the OneNote Online app and will be available in the coming weeks for the OneNote Class Notebook add-in for desktop (2013 or 2016) and Windows 10 app.

Updates for OneNote 6

New embeddable content from third-party partners

Last year, we announced that OneNote supports embedding interactive content such as YouTube, Vimeo, Slideshare, Sway, Docs.com and Office Mix. Today, we are announcing support for a new set of partners to embed content onto the OneNote canvas including:
  • Quizlet
  • ThingLink
  • GeoGebra
  • Wizer
  • Sketchfab 3D

To view all of our supported embed content, visit this public OneNote notebook, created by @OneNoteC.

OneNote Class Notebook and LMS updates

We recently announced these updates to OneNote Class Notebook:
  • Read/Unread support for page distributions and assignments in the Class Notebook add-in for OneNote.
  • New LMS’s supported in the Class Notebook add-in for OneNote.
In addition, we are about to launch new assignment and grade support for the Skooler LMS in the next update of the Class Notebook add-in for OneNote desktop. You can learn more at our Education Partner page. We plan to continually improve these tools and deliver on top requests in 2017, just as we did in 2016. Check out the 2016 recap for OneNote.
Please don’t hesitate to email us directly at classnotebook@onenote.uservoice.com, where the OneNote Class Notebook product team reads through every piece of feedback received. We’re excited for teachers to try out these new improvements and look forward to hearing feedback!

Office Lens for iPad and the Immersive Reader

We are also announcing the availability of Office Lens for iPad. Shipping together with an improved version of Office Lens for iPhone, both apps have Learning Tools built right in. Scan documents and whiteboards with your iPad or iPhone camera. Launching the Immersive Reader lets you hear the text from the printed page read back to you. The words are highlighted as they’re read to make them accessible for all students.
